Doum Tech

Often found accompanying bellydance, these drums have been around since the neolithic era and are still the primary rhythm instruments around the Mideast, North Africa, into the Balkans. Along the way humans developed effective playing techniques and these are always developing to serve the music.

Open level hand drumming class will focus on basic hits, technique, rhythms and group play.

Drums are available for use in class, to reserve please email.

Instruction will generally be on the darbuka. aka arabic tabla, doumbek, derbekki, toumbelek. Many names, same drum. Frame drums and riq are also welcome.

It’s encouraged to attend all four weeks at a reduced rate of, but individual class rates are also available.

7.45 Summer Drum SOLO Intermediate

WHAT: This summer, learn a short drum solo for the tabla, that will integrate some techniques such as split hand, finger rolls, and other ornaments.

Requirements: A drum (aka doumbek, darbuka, tabla). Prior study of rhythm, and darbuka technique is recommended to attend this class.

WHEN: Wednesdays August 11th-September 8th 5.15-6.15pm EDT

Recordings available for those who cannot make this time.

A Zoom link will be sent out 10 minutes before the session begins.

Beginner Level Learn a Drum Composition

WHAT: We will incorporate our basic rhythms into a drum piece that we will learn and play in the course of this 5 week course. 

Requirements: A drum (aka doumbek, darbuka, tabla).

WHEN: Wednesdays September 22- October 20th 6.30-7.30pm EDT

Recordings available for those who cannot make this time.

GENERAL CLASSES (not currently on offer)

MidEast drumming 2 levels

Intro Level

We will cover the basic hits and method in mideast drumming as well as common rhythms and group drumming!

Darbuka, doumbek, tabla focus, but frame drums, riq are welcome!

Limited # of drums to borrow, reserve with Rami via email

ADVANCED/ intermediate level for those with some drumming history. We will focus on technique, performance, soloing, split hand, advanced hits, and learning compositions. 






Rami Tabla Darbuka Classes

Rami offers NYC classes in mideastern percussion. Arabic and Turkish Split hand technique on the doumbek (darbuka / tabla), and Egyptian technique on the riqq.   Rami also offers private lessons.

Learn Fundamental Technique and Basic Rhythms with a group. Drop into regular weekly classes or check out the introductory workshops.

Sun Aug 23 Drum and Dance Day Guest Star Dance Instructor, sessions for drummers and dancers. 11am-10PM includes classes, Lunch, Dinner, Recital, and option to stay overnight.

Sunday Aug 30 One Day Intro to Split Hand Workshop Series Details: 11am- 10PM (6-10 is recital + dinner)
